Your website tells people about your business once they’ve already found you. Your Google Business Profile is often how they find you in the first place. It’s what shows up when someone searches your business name, or searches for what you do near them, on Google Search and Google Maps.
If you’re a small business owner in South Africa trying to get found online, getting this profile set up properly is one of the highest-impact things you can do, and it’s something we build and configure for every client as part of getting your online presence sorted. Here’s exactly how that works.
Why Your Google Business Profile Matters
A website answers the question “what do they offer” once someone has already landed on it. A Google Business Profile answers an earlier question: “does a business like this exist near me, and can I trust them?”
For local SA businesses, most first impressions happen right there in the search results or on the map, long before anyone clicks through to a website. Getting it right matters just as much as the website itself.
What Information We’ll Need From You
To set your profile up properly the first time, we’ll ask you for the following.
- Your exact registered business name. The name you trade under, not a slogan or a keyword-stuffed version of it.
- A contact phone number customers can actually reach you on.
- Your business address, if customers visit you in person, or confirmation that you’re a service-area business (you go to customers, rather than them coming to you), in which case no public address is listed.
- Your service area, if applicable. The suburbs, towns, or region you cover.
- Your operating hours, including anything unusual, like by appointment only, WhatsApp-only contact, or closed on certain days.
- A short description of what your business does, who it’s for, and what makes it worth choosing. Written the way you’d explain it to a customer, not a list of keywords.
- A list of your main services or products.
- A logo and a handful of real photos of your premises, your team, and your work. Stock photos hurt more than they help here.
- A Google account (Gmail address) you’ll use to manage the profile going forward. If you don’t have one, we’ll help you set one up. This is the account that will own your listing.
How We Set It Up
Once we have those details, here’s what happens.
- We create the profile using your exact business details, matching your website and any other listings word for word. This consistency matters for how Google ranks you.
- We choose the primary category with care. This is one of the most important fields on the whole profile, since it determines which searches you’re eligible to appear in, so we pick precisely, not aspirationally.
- We fill in every relevant field, including hours, service area or address, website link, phone number, services, and a written description.
- We add your logo and starter photos.
- We add your own Google account as an Owner on the profile (more on this below).
- We take the profile through Google’s verification process. Depending on your business category, Google may verify you by phone, email, video call, or a postcard sent to your address. This step is essential. An unverified profile is largely invisible in search results, no matter how complete it is.
Who Owns The Profile: You, From Day One
This is worth being upfront about, because it’s a common point of confusion with agencies. Your Google Business Profile is not something we hold onto and hand over later. We add you as a full Owner on the profile as part of setup, using your own Google account.
Google Business Profiles support multiple owners at once. That means from the very start, you have full owner-level access alongside us, not a limited view or a promise for later. We manage the day-to-day work, like updates, posts, and responding to reviews if that’s part of your plan, simply because it’s convenient for you, not because we’re holding something you don’t have access to.
If you ever want to manage it entirely yourself, or move to someone else, no transfer negotiation is needed. You’re already an owner. The only extra step is optionally making yourself Primary Owner (the top-level role) and removing our access, which takes a couple of minutes in your profile settings.
One technical note: Google applies a short 7-day waiting period after any new owner is added before that person can do certain sensitive things, like removing other owners. This is a standard Google anti-hijacking measure that applies to every profile, not something specific to how we work with you.
Keeping It Active After Setup
A profile that’s filled in but never touched again tends to fade in relevance over time. Depending on your plan with us, ongoing upkeep can include posting updates, responding to reviews, keeping hours accurate around holidays, and adding new photos periodically. If this isn’t part of your current plan and you’d like it to be, just ask.
